An Estill County teacher has been selected to participate in a national discussion about challenges facing schools.
Estill Springs Elementary Principal Loretta Cruse announced this week that Toni Garrett Hall, a third and fourth grade teacher at Estill Springs, will be participating in the third annual Teachers Town Hall that will air live on MSNBC later this month.
The town hall will be hosted at the New York Public Library in midtown Manhattan.
The program focuses on the most important challenges and opportunities facing America’s teachers and will feature examples of great teaching from various schools and classrooms from across the country.
Hall, who has been teaching math and writing for nine years, is one of only nine to 12 teachers selected nationally to participate in the discussion.
“She is not just representing our school,” Cruse said. “She is representing our community, our state and the nation.”
Hall found out last week she would be traveling to New York City to participate.
She was nominated through WLEX 18 and will begin talking with them and practicing for the event soon.
Cruse asked the other teachers at Estill Springs to talk with Hall to not only boost her confidence while participating the event, but to also share their stories of struggles in the classroom with her.
“She will be speaking not only for her classroom but for Estill Springs and all of the Estill County community.”
The event will air Sept. 23 as part of the 2012 Education Nation Week. NBC will collect questions and ideas leading up to the town hall discussion at facebook.com/EducationNation and on Twitter @EducationNation.
Hall, who is married to Chris Hall and has three children, hasn’t ever been to New York City and said she is excited for the trip and the opportunity.
