An Estill County couple has been arrested and charged with manufacturing methamphetamine after police found a one-step lab in their camper on Stacy Lane.
Estill County Sheriff’s Deputy Randy Farthing reported that dispatch advised him that callers were complaining about a naked man running in the road and doing jumping jacks on Stacy Lane.
When Farthing arrived, along with Deputy Russell “Doc” Morris and Kentucky State Police Trooper Jason Carpenter, he found Jeffery Fox, 44, of Turner Avenue, in the road wearing only his underwear.
Fox told the officers there were men inside the camper he and his girlfriend, Melissa Bishop, shared on Stacy Lane. He said the men were shooting at him and trying to stab him.
He then attempted to hide in Farthing’s cruiser.
Farthing said Fox became “very paranoid” while he was being questioned.
“He then started screaming that they were in the car with him,” Farthing wrote in his report.
Fox proceeded to kick and punch Farthing as he exited the cruiser. Farthing and Morris chased him down Stacy Lane where they got into another altercation. This time, Fox kicked and punched both officers before he was subdued and cuffed.
While Fox was waiting in the cruiser, Carpenter and Morris went to the camper to see if there was anyone inside that may have been shooting at Fox.
Farthing wrote in his report, “At that time, they smelled a strong chemical smell and saw a clear baggie that contained batteries that had been taken apart.”
The officers also found coffee filters.
Morris said split lithium batteries, like the ones found in the camper, are typically a sign that meth is produced there.
“There really isn’t any other reason to split lithium batteries than to make meth,” he said.
The officers obtained a search warrant and found a one-step meth lab in the camper.
Fox was arrested and charged with manufacturing methamphetamine, public intoxication of a controlled substance excluding alcohol and third-degree assault of a police officer.
Bishop, 44, of Turner Avenue, who was standing outside the camper while the altercation and arrest happened, was also arrested and charged with public intoxication of a controlled substance excluding alcohol and manufacturing methamphetamine, first offense.
Farthing reported that her pupils were constricted, she had trouble standing and would not cooperate with the officers. She had been staying in the camper with Fox.
