“Muddy and wet” are the words Estill County Fair Board President DeWayne Lambert used to describe last week’s county fair.

As often happens on fair week, the county was doused with three or four inches of rain, leaving fair go-ers wading mud.

Lightning forced rides to close on at least one occasion.  However, for the most part, both the rides and other events commenced pretty much as usual.

Estill County Family and Consumer Sciences agent Chelsea Bicknell said exhibits were up in comparison with last years.

Poultry and beef cattle shows lasted long into the night.

Attendance was down on a couple of nights, but on Saturday night, the turnout for the Demolition Derby was very good and made up for the slow nights, said fair board member Bobby Carol Noland.

Noland commended Paradise Amusements for being respectful and taking good care of their equipment.  She also said the carnival was recommended by the state inspector as one of the state’s better carnivals.

Now fair board members are left with the task of cleaning up.  They have already been working to smooth the miry dirt track with a bulldozer.

Lambert expressed appreciation for the sponsors of the fair, the fair board members, and all those who helped who are not members of the fair board, including the county for the use of their road equipment around the fairgrounds.
