A witness to a drug deal at Stop and Shop lead to the arrest of two local men last week.
Irvine Division of Police Chief Brad Smith and Captain Adrian McKinney received calls from dispatch about a drug transaction in the parking lot of the store.
According to the police citations, it was reported that the deal took place between the occupants of two vehicles: a white Jeep and a charcoal-colored Camry.
Smith stopped the Camry on Richmond Road and McKinney located the Jeep in the parking lot of Advance Auto Parts.
The driver of the Camry, James Stevens, 66, of Leighton Road, told Smith he had pills in his sock. Smith reported Stevens took a plastic bag with approximately 20 pills from his sock.
The pills were identified at Percocet 10 mg tablets.
Stevens told Smith he got the pills from the occupant of the white Jeep, identified as Donnie Williams, 53, of Barnes Mountain Road. He said Williams gave him the pills because he owed him money.
McKinney found in the Jeep a prescription bottle that had been filled on the same date of the arrest only 40 minutes prior to him locating the vehicle.
He said there were two different manufacturers of pills in the bottle. Both matched the manufacturers of the pills in Stevens’ possession.
The prescription information of the bottle said Williams was dispensed 120 pills.
McKinney counted only 113 in the bottle.
Williams and Stevens were arrested.
Williams is charged with first degree trafficking in a controlled substance, first offense. He was released on a $10,000 surety bond signed by Raymond Kelly.
Stevens is charged with first degree possession of a controlled substance, first offense.
He was released on a $650 surety signed by Jimmy Stevens.
Both men are scheduled to appear in Estill County District Court Sept. 19.
