Octavia…Snowmageddon…a winter storm strikes

Some called it  Octavia, some called it Snowmageddon, but whatever you called it, this February snowstorm nearly brought business as usual to a halt in Estill County. On Monday, a foot to a foot and a half of snow fell, mostly during daylight hours.Schools, mail delivery and some courthouse offices were already closed for President’s Day, but many other local businesses, even pharmacies and doctor’s offices closed early.Irvine Police Chief Brad Smith said the police department has not had a lot of law enforcement calls, but they have assisted some people stuck in ditches and have provided some courtesy rides.Salt trucks and snow plows have been getting a work out, after being mostly idle this winter.More snow showers were predicted for Tuesday evening and Wednesday, and temperatures were expected to plummet well below zero.
